Is your garage door crooked, stuck, or hanging off its rails?

That is an off-track door, and you should stop using it right away. Running the opener to force it can bend the track, crack the panels, or drop the door. Most off-track doors are caused by the door being hit, though a worn roller, a bent track, or a broken spring or cable can do it too. Until it is back on its rails it is both a safety risk and a security risk, because the door will not close and seal properly. We are based here in San Marcos, so we can usually get your door back on track the same day.

Why San Diego County calls us

Why San Diego County homeowners trust Door Dorks with an off-track door

Door Dorks has worked on North County garage doors since 2009, with more than a thousand 5-star reviews to show for it. Call us for an off-track door and you get the crew that does the repair, not a call center that sells your job to the nearest contractor. We have been family-owned since 2009, based right here in San Diego County.

An off-track door is rarely just the track. Nine times out of ten a broken spring or cable let the door slip, so we find the real cause instead of forcing the door back and hoping. We realign the door, replace whatever failed, and test the balance before we leave. Off-track work is part of our full San Marcos garage door repair.

Educational

What causes a garage door to come off track

A garage door rides on rollers that run inside a metal track on each side. When something throws that system off, the door jumps the rail. These are the usual reasons.

The door was hit

The most common cause by far. Backing into a half-open door, even lightly, knocks it off the rails and can bend both the panels and the track.

Worn or broken rollers

Rollers crack, flatten, or seize up with age. A roller that pops out of the rail lets that corner of the door slip off the track.

A bent or loose track

A dented rail, or a track that has worked loose from the wall, gives the rollers nowhere to run, so the door binds and jumps out.

A broken spring or cable

When a spring or cable fails, one side of the door drops and pulls it out of the track. See our spring repair and cable repair.

Something stuck in the track

Dirt, a small stone, or a hardened lump of old grease in the track can push a roller off the rail as the door travels.

Skipped maintenance

Dry rollers and loose hardware wear out faster, so doors that never get a tune-up come off track sooner. Read the full off-track causes guide.

Warning signs

Signs your garage door is off track

An off-track door is usually easy to spot, and every one of these means you should stop using it.

The door looks crooked, with one side higher than the other.

The door is stuck part-way and will not open or close.

The door grinds, scrapes, or shudders as it moves.

A roller has popped out of the metal rail.

You see a gap between the rollers and the track, or a bent section of rail.

The door hangs loose or leans out from the wall.

Safety and security: do not force an off-track door

A garage door weighs well over a hundred pounds and stays under spring tension even when it is off the track. Running the opener to muscle it back can bend the rails, crack the panels, or bring the door down. This is not a DIY fix: the springs and cables hold serious tension, and a wrong move can cause a serious injury. It is a security problem too, because a door that will not close properly leaves your garage, and often your home, open until it is repaired.

If your door just came off track

Stop and do not press the opener again.

Keep people, pets, and cars clear of the door.

Leave it where it is and call us for same-day service.

Door stuck open or off the track? We do same-day repair.

A door stuck open leaves your garage and home exposed, and a door jammed shut traps your car inside. Either way we keep same-day slots open across North County and are usually there within a few hours.

What your door needs

Realign the door, or replace the damaged parts

Not every off-track door needs new parts. Here is how we decide what yours needs, and we tell you straight.

A realignment is enough

The door left the track but the rails and rollers are still good.

We reseat the door, tighten the hardware, and re-balance it.

We fix the small cause, like a loose bracket, so it holds.

Parts need replacing

A rail is bent, or the rollers are cracked or seized.

A broken spring or cable pulled the door off and has to be replaced.

The panels are damaged and need repair or replacement.

Because a failed spring or cable is the most common reason a door jumps the track, we always check them on an off-track call, so you do not pay for the same problem twice.

What happens when we arrive

A 29-point safety inspection, then a written quote

It depends on what actually failed, and we would rather tell you that than publish a number we cannot stand behind. Here is what we look at, and you get the exact price in writing before any work begins.

One of our certified technicians will complete a thorough 29-point safety inspection upon arrival and provide you with a detailed report, as well as recommendations to ensure that your garage door is functioning properly and safely moving forward.

An off-track door is rarely just the track, so we do not quote one over the phone. What it takes to put right depends on why it came off, whether the panels or rails were damaged, and whether a spring or cable failed with it. You get the exact price in writing before any work begins.

Replacing a whole door? We offer financing too. Ask about our current promotion when you call.

How to prevent it

How to keep your garage door on track

Most off-track doors can be prevented with a little regular care. The door runs on rollers, hinges, cables, and springs that all wear over time, and a few simple habits keep them running true.

Keep the tracks clear of dirt and debris, and never run the door when something is blocking it. Once a year, have the rollers, hinges, springs, and cables checked and lubricated and the hardware tightened, so a worn part gets caught before it drops the door. And give the door room: do not pull out until it is fully open, since clipping a moving door is one of the fastest ways to knock it off track. A quick annual tune-up costs far less than an emergency garage door off track repair.

No shortcuts
What is included in every off-track visit

Putting a door back on track with us is more than lifting it into place. Here is what you get every time.

A full inspection of the track, rollers, cables, springs, hinges, and panels.

The root cause fixed, usually a spring, cable, or roller, so it does not slip again.

The door tested for travel and balance, then lubricated.

The door safely secured and set back into the track, correctly aligned.

Bent track straightened or replaced, and loose hardware tightened.

A firm written price up front and a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Door Dorks are one of the most honest companies I have done business with for our home…Nathan fixed everything the door needed and was very nice and professional explaining everything. This type of honesty and integrity is hard to find!! I highly recommend Nathan and Door dorks for your garage door needs!

-Sharon C.

Our garage door spring recently broke. I love DIY projects, but not this job. We asked our neighbors and many recommended Door Dorks. We couldn’t have been more pleased. Nathan was the tech that came out to fix our spring. Nathan was friendly and got the job done in less than 2 hrs. Thanks Nathan and Door Dorks for a job well done!

-Kevin S.

My old wood garage door was in need of an update and so, of course, I called Door Dorks and I can’t be happier! My existing wood door was an odd size and Gina measured, used creative thinking, and found me a perfect door. Matt did a flawless install, very professional, and I’m very pleased. Very fair price and no upselling for things I don’t need. You need to pick Door Dorks!

-Michael M.

Charlie and Brandon did a great job. Plus the sales team was helpful getting me exactly what I wanted. The new door matches my existing door. The opener works with my home automation. Install team arrive exactly when promised, was friendly, and got the job done. When they completed, they showed me how everything worked. Great Job.

-William P.

Nathan let us know his arrival time, then arrived on time, diagnosed the issue quickly and showed us our options, including all costs. The repair was done right, and he had all the parts with him that he needed. He also fixed another issue for a reasonable cost that could have ruined our door prematurely. We used Door Dorks 8 years ago, and will use them next time we need any garage door issue resolved!

-Sid T.

Over the years I have used them, my experience with Door Dorks has alway been excellent. This time office staff tried to help me trouble shoot my problem over the phone. When that didn’t solve the problem, they came out the next morning. Adam arrived when he said he would. Kept me informed as to his progress, was friendly, knowledgeable and professional. Repaired the faulty part and did a complete check and service of my garage door. I’m completely happy. Would give more stars if possible.

-Sue T.

Our garage door was making more noise than usual and given past experience, I knew Door Dorks was the right company to help. I was able to get an appointment next day and the technician (Adam) was extremely helpful at walking us through the options of what we needed to do vs. could do if we wanted to be proactive. Highly recommend these guys for any garage door service needs you have.

-Nick H.

Nathan communicated with me about when he would arrive, gave me a fair quote, and finished his work efficiently. We had another door company out for an estimate the day before Nathan came out, and he wanted to charge us double what Door Dorks quoted. Then he came down on his price repeatedly when we balked. Door dorks was a much better process.

-Matt S.

We just had Door Dorks install a new garage door and motor at our home. We were very pleased with the customer service and professionalism of everyone on the team from Gina (the person that helped us order and select our door and motor), to Nathan (the tech that took measurements and brought samples so we could select the texture and color of the door), Brandon (the tech that helped with the demo and install of our new door and motor, and Charlie (the tech that installed, set up the door and motor, and did the finale walk through). Everyone did what they promised to do, I highly recommend using this company for your garage door needs. My neighbors keep asking about our new door and motor, because the door and motor are a big upgrade to our curb appeal.

-Stephanie D.

Huge thank you for the fast, professional care Door Dorks provided at my parents’ home! I requested a quote over Yelp and their response was well within the 10 min average response time. From the Yelp and phone conversations I had with their staff and Adam who was able to come out same day provided additional relief knowing we could have the home secured right away. Adam was efficient, professional, and personable during the whole process from diagnosing the issue to being able to jump right into the repair. From my first inquiry to a finished repair, the whole process took approximately 3 hours and I couldn’t be happier to know that we wouldn’t have to prolong this repair past 24 hours from the break happening.

-Stephanie O.

The 2 service men that came out to our house to install our new garage door were amazing guys. Brandon and Charlie knew exactly what they were doing with no hesitation. Once they removed our heavy old broken wood door they replaced it with a beautiful new door. The gentlemen were very friendly down to earth and installed out door in less than 2.5 hours. The fact that they did not leave until the door was properly installed was amazing. These guys are trust worthy hard working door dorks. Thank you Brandon and Charlie!

San Diego County off-track garage door FAQs

How much does garage door off track repair cost?

It depends on why the door came off and what was damaged, so we do not quote it over the phone. One of our certified technicians completes a 29-point safety inspection on arrival and gives you a detailed report with recommendations, then the exact price in writing first.

No. An off-track door can fall or jam, and forcing it with the opener can bend the track and damage the panels. Stop using it, keep everyone clear, and call for same-day repair.

Usually a broken spring or cable let one side drop, or a roller wore out, the track bent, or the door was hit by a car. We find the real cause so it does not happen again. There is more detail in our off-track causes guide.

Almost always it can be realigned. If the door has only left the track, we reseat it and re-balance it. We replace parts only when a rail is bent or a roller, cable, or spring has failed.

We do not recommend it. The springs and cables hold heavy tension even when the door is off the track, and a wrong move can drop the door or cause injury. It is a job for a pro with the right tools.

Most off-track repairs take one to two hours on site. We carry common rollers, cables, and springs on the truck, so we can usually finish the same day in one visit.

Yes. We are based in San Marcos, so we can usually reach your home the same day, often within a couple of hours, and a door stuck open or off the track moves up the schedule.
